Lake Wylie is located in York County, South Carolina and has a population of 8,841. Lake Wylie is located on a peninsula along the shore of Lake Wylie, a reservoir that was named for Dr. W. Gil Wylie in 1960. Despite being in South Carolina, it is considered an affluent suburb to Charlotte, North Carolina. The Province of South Carolina was founded in 1670. Twelve years later it was divided into three counties. One of these, Craven County, roughly encompassed the northern half of the colony, while the northern portion of York County was considered part of North Carolina.
